Van Nuys is a populous neighborhood in the heart of the San Fernando Valley
region of Los Angeles. It straddles the 405 freeway just north of the 101-freeway junction and is surrounded by Lake Balboa
, Panorama City
, Valley Glen, and Sherman Oaks
. In general, Van Nuys can be characterized as quite urban, though it does afford residents access to the Van Nuys Recreation Area, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, and a ways to the south, the gorgeous Santa Monica Mountains.
The area is reasonably accessible on a bike, on foot, and on public transportation; prospective inhabitants with cars will also note both its strong centrality within the Valley and its close proximity to major freeways like the 101, 405, 5, and 170. The best local culture and commerce lies to the south of Van Nuys itself—along Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. Primary surface streets include Van Nuys Blvd., Sepulveda Blvd., Victory Blvd., and Sherman Way.
