Carson is a relatively large, relatively populous city in Los Angeles County. It is a part of the South Bay
region, south of LA proper and a ways east of Torrance
. Carson’s population boom originally corresponded with the development of its oil industry, which was the lifeblood of its economy for decades. BP West Coast still employs more workers than any other company in Carson. Perhaps most notable among Carson’s institutions is California State University, Dominguez Hills; this large, public university serves as the area’s primary hub for higher education, attracting students from Long Beach
, Compton, and the rest of the South Bay.
Carson is a car-dependent city. The 405 freeway bisects its territory and therefore serves as its primary artery, though it is also bordered by the 110 freeway in the west and clipped by the 91 and 710 freeways in the north and east, respectively. The Carson Circuit bus does provide the community with some public transportation.
