Manhattan Beach is an affluent coastal city in the South Bay
Region of Los Angeles County. It is bordered by El Segundo
in the north and Hermosa Beach
in the south. Housing in Manhattan Beach is densely organized, but extremely upscale, especially close to the beach, where single-family homes with custom architecture commonly extend to the very edges of their owners' properties. Manhattan's pier is a bustling, pedestrian-friendly commercial nexus full of high-quality restaurants and designer shops.
Area beaches are public and quite well kept, attracting Manhattan Beach residents and other Angelenos for beach volleyball, surfing, strolling along the strand, or sunbathing. Locals find that some errands can be accomplished on foot, but that access to a vehicle is still important, as the commerce along Sepulveda Blvd. (the Pacific Coast Highway) is vital. Primary arteries through Manhattan Beach include this, Manhattan Beach Blvd., Highland Ave., Valley Dr./Ardmore Ave., and Marine Ave.; the 405 freeway is just to the east, accessible via Rosecrans Ave.
