Whittier is a large city in the southwest corner of the San Gabriel Valley
. It touches one of the eastern boundaries of Los Angeles County, bordering such cities and unincorporated territories as Pico Rivera, Industry, Hacienda Heights, La Habra
, and Santa Fe Springs. Whittier is home to a smattering of historical places and prominent entertainment industry shooting locations; it has many well preserved old buildings and admirably maintained public spaces. Residents also enjoy a somewhat aberrational patch of green, undeveloped land—most of the rest of the San Gabriel Valley is urban sprawl all the way—which lends Whittier a nice, somewhat rural vibe.
For shopping, dining, and night life, you generally want to head toward Montebello and Downtown Los Angeles
to the northwest; Whittier itself has a reasonable number of eateries and bars, but it's more of a residential area than anything. Primary arteries running through the area include the 5, 60, and 605 freeways, as well as Whittier Blvd. and Colina Road.
