About San Pedro

San Pedro is an incorporated community within the City of Los Angeles—the southernmost territory in entire county, as a matter of fact. It borders Lomita, Harbor City, Wilmington, and Long Beach. The city was once known primarily for its fishing industry, which is still a prominent feature in its economic makeup, but it is now known more for housing the Port of Los Angeles, the most heavily trafficked international container port in the United States. Though San Pedro is close in proximity to such lavish areas as Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates, it is significantly different in character: it is less exclusively residential, largely owing to its industrial commerce; its streets are much busier, teeming with workers and commuters who are coming and going; its housing is more modest and much more affordable, with a significantly higher percentage of rental units; finally, it is much more ethnically diverse. Major throughways include the 110 freeway, the 47, and Gaffey Street.
