Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City are two smallish, immediately adjacent communities in San Bernardino County. The region is best known as one of Southern California’s primary hubs for outdoor sports and recreation. In the winter, skiing and snowboarding at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are huge draws for tourists and locals alike; in the summer, outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and mountain biking in the Big Bear and greater San Bernardino National Forest areas are also quite popular.
The permanent populations of Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City are very small, but the aforementioned attractions cause the number of people living/staying/stopping over in these communities to wax and wane dramatically with the seasons. Notable charms of the area obviously include gorgeous, far-as-the-eye-can-see wilderness and green, open space; notable drawbacks obviously include a lack of accessibility and centrality. Of course, most residents like this balance just fine. Primary arteries: routes 18 and 38.
