La Mesa is a midsized city in the east of San Diego County. It borders the Lake Murray Reservoir, as well as a handful of towns and cities that includes Lemon Grove
, Spring Valley
, Redwood Village, and El Cajon
. La Mesa is probably most distinctive in its topography; it is generally situated atop a plateau (you know, a “mesa”) and surrounded by foothills and valleys. Exploring the hills will turn up some picturesque views. The city—which is small enough at about 9 square miles and about 57,000 residents to feel like a town at times—hosts community events like farmer's markets, concert series, and car shows.
Centrality and accessibility are strong suits for La Mesa. It lies at the convergence of several major San Diego County arteries: the 8, 125, and 94 freeways. Prospective residents will find that it functions quite well as a home base for commuting, but also that some basic tasks can be accomplished on foot, particularly toward the city's center.
