Murrieta is a populous city in the southwest of Riverside County. It borders, most significantly, the cities of Temecula and Wildomar, and is otherwise surrounded by a great deal of unincorporated territory and hilly/mountainous wilderness. This open, undeveloped topography is a landmark feature of Murrieta; even for residents who do not prefer to visit or explore them, the peaks of the Santa Ana Mountain Range are clearly visible from anywhere in the city.
Murrieta is primarily residential, serving as a bedroom community for San Diego, Orange County, and Temecula, and even Los Angeles
; these are all brutal commutes distance-wise, but Murrieta does offer a certain seclusion and provinciality that many of its residents prioritize. Murrieta is also within striking distance of Camp Pendleton and sports a significant military/veteran presence. Wine enthusiasts will note that the city's proximity to Temecula wine country is an obvious perk to living in the area. Primary arteries: the 15 and 215 freeways, as well as Highway 79.
