The San Gabriel Valley's titular city lies in the west of the region, bordered by Alhambra in the west, San Marino in the north, East San Gabriel in the east, and Rosemead in the south. Like many Los Angeles municipalities, San Gabriel was originally a mission. It eventually became one of the very first towns in the LA metropolitan area. The city's population is not immense, but it is fairly large for how small the city's territory is (around 4 square miles), resulting in one of the highest population densities in the area. San Gabriel residents enjoy strong centrality: the commerce and culture of Pasadena is just to the northwest, the up-and-coming bar/cafe/restaurant scene in Alhambra is just to the west, and Downtown Los Angeles, in all of its glory, is no more than a short car ride to the southwest. Primary throughways include the 10 freeway, San Gabriel Blvd., Las Tunas Dr., and Mission Road.
