Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. It lies east of the 405 freeway and straddles the 101 freeway to the north and south. The area is primarily residential, though the Sherman Oaks Galleria is both sizable and heavily trafficked; there are also lots of bars, restaurants, and cafés lining Ventura Boulevard that make for a nice little commercial district. Housing in Sherman Oaks takes many forms. Neighborhoods south of Ventura Boulevard are generally comprised of higher-end single-family homes, while the blocks surrounding major throughways like Sepulveda and Van Nuys Boulevards are lined with relatively large apartment buildings. There are also many single-family homes—smaller, in some cases, but not in all—on the minor connecting streets. Most of Sherman Oaks is reasonably close to either Woodley Park or one of the many parks lining the canyons to the south, excellent for those looking to live near some green patches. Centrality and accessibility are strong; traffic permitting, residents can jump on the 405, the 101, Ventura Blvd., Burbank Blvd., or one of the canyon roads and end up anywhere in the Valley, on the west side, downtown—you name it. Sherman Oaks is somewhat accessible on foot or by bike, depending on what you wish to accomplish: basic errands should be easy, but leaving Sherman Oaks for other places can be difficult short of the North Hollywood Metro station.
