Glendale is a city in the San Fernando Valley
. It is part of Los Angeles County, and with close to 200,000 residents, it ranks as the 22nd largest city in the entire state of California. Glendale is known for having one of the largest and most well established Armenian-American populations in the country; many local businesses are now owned and operated by members of this community.
Many residents commute to Burbank
or Downtown LA
, though the city itself does not lack for commerce, with the offices/facilities of Nestlé and Walt Disney Imagineering right in town. Glendale is also home to two immense shopping centers: Americana at Brand and the Glendale Galleria. The former is similar to The Grove in Los Angeles—conceived as a combination of commerce and culture—and the latter, a more traditional destination for shopping with over two hundred stores.
Residents enjoy a fine view of the San Gabriel Mountains and of Griffith Park, both prime destinations for those who like hiking and other such outdoor recreation. Glendale's culinary scene includes, as one might expect, a large contingent of Armenian and Middle Eastern restaurants, though it also boasts the original Porto's Bakery. Primary arteries: San Fernando Blvd., the 5 freeway, the 134 freeway, the 2 freeway.
