Downey is a populous city in the heart of the Southeast region of Los Angeles County. It borders eight different municipalities, most prominently Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Bellflower
, Southgate, and Bell Gardens. Downey was once an epicenter of aerospace manufacturing—the Apollo space program had roots there—but over the years, it has transitioned to a healthcare-driven economy, with Kaiser Permanente, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, and Downey Regional Medical Center comprising three of its top five employers.
The Downey farmer's market, created in 2008, has rapidly become one of the area's most popular attractions. The city has a relatively high median annual household income for the Southeast, and about half of residences are owner-occupied. Downey has strong centrality and accessibility owing largely to the 710, 605, 5, and 105 freeways, which circumscribe the city. Residents also enjoy access to public transit via the Downey Metro Green Line light rail station. Other prominent local throughways include Firestone and Lakewood Blvds.
